HALLWAYS WELCOME CHRISTMAS...

Hallways and entrances are, after all, the first space guests see when they come into our homes. So we make them as welcoming as possible within the confines of the space available. At Christmastime especially, with all the guests and visitors entering my home, these spaces get  special attention.

I am blessed with a large front hall and a nice wide back hallway and corridor.

In my front entrance way sits the desk I recently updated with paint.
You can see that post here. Above it I hung a picture that had belonged to my parents in law. I painted and aged the frame.
There is a little brass plaque on the frame.
Placing my old nativity here seemed like a natural choice
This "creche" was part of my childhood including the little angel ornament hanging from the little roof to the left on the picture below
Immediately beyond the entrance way is the large stairwell and hallways leading to the other areas of the house.
In the nook of the stairwell sits a darling little cherry desk I picked up in an antique shop in England years ago. It is the perfect size for the space.
For Christmas, I placed one of my favorite father Christmas's my Russian Father Christmas   on it.
Next to him sits a lovely little lidded pot I picked up at GW.
On the book lamp I placed a little Christmas book open to a Christmas tree page.
On the wall above the desk are hung my three open frames. I replaced the family pics with bisque shell angels and an old transfer ware plate.
Down the end of the hallway, heading to the back door, there is a recessed archway where I have a wrought iron mirror hanging and where  a small hall tree bench sits below it. Here, I hung a simple branch of greenery with a burlap bow and some simple but pretty cream glass ornaments.
Finally, on the little old hall tree by the back door I hung a favorite Peace Sign wreath adorned with a simple wooden dove and burlap bow.
Thanks for stopping by, and please come visit tomorrow to see the dining room and living room !

Hugs for now,
Mandy

A TONED DOWN CHRISTMAS

A toned down Christmas....

Now I know, a toned down Christmas sounds sort of wrong somehow... but this year after spending a lot of time and effort toning down our entire house decor in order to help depersonalize and create a "cleaner look" to help sell it, the last thing I wanted to do was overload everything with Christmas decor.

I also wanted to dig through all the Christmas decorations and sort out what I wanted to keep and what I did not. This process actually slowed me down quite a bit.... but I finally got done and really like the new look.

"I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas...." is the song that plays in the living room:
The dining room is soft and sentimental
The kitchen is simple in red, green and white.
The hallways brings peace on earth.
And the outside sports fresh evergreens!
I will highlight each room over the next couple of weeks if you can bare to see another decorated space!

Mandy

A NEW TABLE TOPPER FOR LIZ!

A  NEW TABLE TOPPER FOR LIZ!

I made this table topper for Liz' s dining room table to tie in with the chair covers that I had made earlier (see those here). Liz had already purchased the fabric which looks a little like burlap. I added a band of brown cotton ribbon and a band made out of some of the leftover drop cloth material to the outside edge.
I made it reversible too.
One side has a brown wooden bead in each corner,  these are the same beads I used on the chair covers.
The other side I added a rosette made out of left over scraps from the old napkins and drop cloth.
And here how the table topper looks with the chairs!
Hope you like it!

PAINTED FILING CABINET FOR LIZ

A painted filing cabinet for Liz's great room

Yes, there is one more item to show from all the projects completed in my close friend, Liz's great room... click here, here, here and here to see all the posts on what we have accomplished thus far!

Well, I haven't shown you her filing cabinet.
Imagine this cabinet to be your basic light maple wood  two drawer filing friend.
Very practical, very necessary but an eyesore.

A little black paint,
a little red paint and some stenciling,
some sanding and waxing and voila!:
Isn't it cute?
By placing two of her painted ladder back chairs either side of it and setting a chess board on top it now also plays the role of  game table!
It's nice isn't it?

Mandy

NEW PAINTED DINING ROOM CHAIRS

Although you have already seen these chairs in a couple of my previous posts featuring the new dining room wall colors this past summer see here and my fall vignettes see here, I thought I would create a post just for them...especially with the holidays coming up .

Anyway, here is our dining room set prior to the transformation. It is a basic, solid oak table that has several leaves which is ideal for family get togethers.
The day I painted my kitchen mantle,
I grabbed one the of the dining armchairs and gave him a quick coat as well. I loved the way he looked and immediately placed him in the hearth area where he popped against the brick back ground.
So late in August, I dragged all six of the the armless chairs out to the garage and proceeded to clean, sand, wipe, paint, sand some more, and finished them off with two coats of polyurethene.
..trying to hide the doggie gnaws and bites....
and here too....
Here's the culprit....caught napping....and she only chewed when she was a puppy ....thank goodness!
So here you can see the end result. I like how the black chairs "ground" the space.
Now I still have the armchair to paint before Thanksgiving!!

Thanks so much for stopping by,

Mandy

A STORY OF A HOUSE

It's been a long time since my last post....I admire all of you who can keep posting and run a household and take care of family and run a business and still find the time to take photos, prepare blogs and keep us entertained with them!  Miss Mustard Seed is one of them....she is truly amazing...

Okay ready? This is a long post so bare with me....
We custom designed and built our home 10 years ago.
Here it is...
If you like the European country style then you will love it. It is truly a personal home designed for our family and taste.... Here are views the back, as well as one from the 17th tee box.
We also own a lake house that is situated just a couple of hours north of here on Big Turkey Lake....
We built it in 2008 and love it!
Here are views of the front and back views of the lake with fire pit and boat!
We take care of both the homes ourselves....all the outside work, grass cutting, edging, flower beds, mulching, all of the inside cleaning, cleaning and cleaning!
Fishers home: 11000 square feet. 7 bedrooms, 5 baths and 2 1/2 baths, full basement, living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, laundry, breakfast and sun room.....
View of the formal living room

Lake house: 2500 square feet. 4 bedrooms, 3 baths,  loft area, living room, dining, kitchen, laundry, screened in porch.
View from stairwell of living room and dining area.

My husband is retired, I work as Stager for the Marchant Keller Williams Team and a couple of other agents in our area.

We have both houses on the market. Yes, we do have too much real estate to take care of!
We love the lake house but we built it thinking we would successfully sell our large permanent home quickly and be able to move into a smaller, less maintenance home etc. But with the housing market the way it is that has unfortunately not happened.

I apologize for such a long post..!!! If you are still here and reading I really hope you will join me in this journey. Your blogs have given me so many ideas and have inspired me to move forward with projects that I have put off for ages....

Thanks for your time,
hugs

NEW DINING CHAIR SLIP COVERS AND SEATS.

NEW DINING CHAIR SLIP COVERS AND SEATS.

Liz wanted a fresh look for her dining chairs. Painting the set was not a choice so  I suggested recovering the chair seats and making some covers for the backs.

The chairs are fairly petite. Not wanting a busy look we talked about linens and drop cloths and burlap. Liz produced some old linen monogrammed napkins that had belonged to her great grandmother. And I took them home and started brain storming.

Now I can sew but have never made slip covers before so this was quite the learning experience for me too...

I decided to keep things simple. I had some complimentary stripe fabric on hand in two different tones, one a dark stripe and one a tan stripe and used them to add a little color and interest to each chair.
For the seat, I used some drop cloth (washed twice and ironed) and sewed on a large band of the dark stripe material.
For the backs, I decided I wanted to use the napkin embroidered initials as well as the stripe material. I cut out the monogram part of the napkin
and sewed it the center of the one of the sides of the slip cover.
I then took the stripe material and sewed a band to the top  of the chair cover and added a wooden bead from a piece of trim.
And here is a dark stripe chair with the back facing forward
Liz had one armchair that required a little different cover.
I basically left the sides open and added some stripe fabric to the sides. Then I made ties out of extra drop cloth fabric and attached them so that they tied under each arm.
Turned out great didn't they?
Thanks so much for visiting!
hugs,
Mandy
